FMX 2011 - 16th Conference on Animation, Effects, Games and Interactive Media

FMX 2011

It was time again to come together in Stuttgart during May 3-6 2011. The 16th Conference on Animation, Effects, Games and Interactive Media was calling.

FMX is the leading VFX-conference in Europe and has grown to become one of the most important international conferences in the industry during the past few years. Numerous national and international press representatives attended the conference in Stuttgart’s Haus der Wirtschaft to find out about current trends, innovative approaches and latest achievements in the world of digital entertainment.

First of all, the location again had the perfect atmosphere and mixture of getting an important heads up of whats going on in the industry and coming together with good friends or colleagues. As usual every day of the conference each had their own focus on a different area, ranging from the virtual-humans forum, Stereoscopic productions – which was obviously a big topic this year -, the VES-forum, presentations and discussions of Siggraph papers to the CG-industry in France and China.

Parallel to these topics a wide range of case-studios have been presented by their creators – mostly post-houses, showing and discussing some of the best artwork that has been done recently, including a variety of commercials or effects for feature-production. Also, more theoretical and very interesting topics like “approaching a CG-production” or “from pitch to screen” were presented as case studies. It was mostly possible (and wanted) to ask questions during or at the end of the presentation. Sometimes the rooms were just a bit crowded – especially on hot topics like “physically based Shading at ILM” or the presentation for the “Battle LA”-feature.

Of course, an important platform for students and freelancers has been as every year the recruiting platform. where more or less every major post-house was looking for new talents. This included MPC, Framestore, Animal logic, Walt Disney Animation. Lucasfilm or Double Negative – just to name a few. Parallel to the presentations there was a small fair with stands from Realflow, CadNetworks or weltenbauer, where you could get a personal hands on or some indepth software tips and tricks.

Another highlight of the conference was the “Echtzeit”-party at wednsday night, where you could chat with professionals from the industry, have some propper german beer or just dance to great house music.

All in all the fmx is a very important platform to get the hottest news whats going on in the CG- and film-industry, meeting or recruiting at new companies and just watching and enjoying amazing CG-artwork. It’s not too early to start thinking about FMX 2012. The conference will be held again during May 8-11 2012. See you there.
